Trauma and Coping

Once we realize that we can live life for this moment in today and now, we can move on to the actual issues of trauma. So coping with trauma on a daily basis is easier when your moving on with life even though trauma exists.
Let me explain, if for instance you have a trigger moment; A smell, thought, touch, a noise, etc.. your living in today not tomorrow, so you leave tomorrow problems for tomorrow. Clearing your mind gives you time and space in your head to deal with todays trigger. Easier said than done, but one the most important things I have learned to do.
Another real life example. Tomorrow is Monday I have to go to work, I have to call in prescriptions for my daughter, I need to make a dentist appointment, I need to call the auto insurance company dealing with an animal collision, along with a few other odds and ends that I probably need to look at my list to remember. However, this is a tomorrow problem, not a today problem. So todays issue is the trigger, right?
Well kind of, I'm sure there are todays list to worry about right? So lets break that down. First thing is to sit down, plant your feet on the floor and breath. Think of the things in your life your grateful for. Now, whatever that trigger was write it down. What coping skills do you have to deal with it? Can you squeeze in a hot shower or a bath, are you thirsty, do you need water? Have you eaten today? Take care of these issues first.
Now once you take acre of those issues write down what you need to accomplish today and then write down what you would like to accomplish today. Return to this all day long. Remember to prioritize this list from important to stuff to things that can wait. One way of addressing these issues is how many spoons do I have left for the day. Spoons are activities that need to be done. When you run out of spoons then its time to stop. Being over exhausted helps no one, especially yourself. Be kind to your self. Self love is important and if you have issues with that I will write on that in a later blog, We will get there I promise.
